DOST Southern Leyte Conducts Hands-on Training on Nata de Coco Processing

Last October 6, 2021, DOST8 thru PSTC Southern Leyte revisited Dungawan sa Tahusan in Hinunangan, Southern Leyte to conduct hands-on training on Nata de Coco processing. 

The said training was a follow up of the Training on Coconut Processing held on September 23, 2021 which featured among others the technology on Nata de Coco processing. During that time the initial fermentation process was conducted. The follow through demonstration on harvesting, sweetening and packaging was done to the group to complete the learning development of the community group composed of women and coconut farmers.

DOST 8 Brings Livelihood Training Sessions Against the Pandemic in Southern Leyte

One way to survive the COVID-19 pandemic is to be sustainable and resilient. 

DOST-8 thru the Provincial S & T Center in Southern Leyte took the initiative to bring livelihood training series on meat and coconut processing recently with orientation on basic food hygiene and good manufacturing practice (GMP) on September 22-23, 2021 at Tahusan, Hinunangan, Southern Leyte. 

The activity started with an opening message from one of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) Members of Southern Leyte, Hon. Myra Rentuza. Dr. Mary Ann Jilly Ramirez, Head of the Department of Food Science and Technology at the Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) discussed basic hygiene and GMP while one of the department's instructors, Ms. Minerva Baclayon conducted the meat processing lecture. The hands-on training was supervised by Mr. Florencio Payac of SLSU.

DOST 8 Participates in the Southern Leyte PRLEC Meeting

The Department of Science and Technology thru the Southern Leyte Provincial S&T Center attended the virtual meeting of the Poverty Reduction, Livelihood and Employment Cluster (PRLEC) of the Provincial Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (PTF-ELCAC) on September 14, 2021 with the theme: "Pag-asa, Pagbangon at Pag-abante sa Bente Syete".

The activity reviewed the status of the action items from the highlights of the previous meeting and was followed with the presentation of the 2020 to August 2021 accomplishments. The PRLEC Member-Agencies then provided updates on their programs and services. 

The DOST, thru Provincial S&T Director Engr. Florita M. Santiago, presented to the cluster the STARBOOKs project for the four barangays in Sogod, Southern Leyte particularly in Brgy. Kauswagan, Benit, Milagroso, and Kahupian. The fund for the said project has been released to LGU-Sogod for the procurement of the STARBOOKs units.
